How to Write on a PDF Form on Your Phone and Send It Back

Schools, local governments and companies often email you a PDF form and ask you to fill it in and send it back. Printing it, writing on it and scanning it again is a hassle, and you may not have a printer at hand. This article explains how to handwrite on a PDF and send it back using only your phone, and how to write neatly.

In short, “Sign / write” in PDF Toolkit lets you write directly on top of a field with your finger. There is no feature for typing into a PDF's form fields with the keyboard, though, and a PDF you receive has to be brought into the app first.

What Ways Are There to Fill In a PDF Form?

PDF documents come in two broad kinds: “form” PDFs where you type into on-screen fields with a keyboard, and blank documents meant to be printed and filled in by hand. PDF Toolkit has no feature for filling in fields with the keyboard like the first kind, but with either kind of document you can write by hand with your finger directly on top of the page. Check the recipient's instructions to see whether handwritten entries are accepted.

How Do I Get a Received PDF Into PDF Toolkit?

The Library in PDF Toolkit has no button for importing a PDF directly. For a PDF that arrived by email or similar, use “Extract pages” under Tools to bring in all pages as a copy.

  1. Save the PDF attached to the email to your phone (download it)
  2. In PDF Toolkit, open “Tools” (the wrench icon at the top right of the Library screen), then “Extract pages,” and pick the saved PDF
  3. Leave all pages selected (if the button reads “Deselect all,” everything is selected) and tap “Extract N pages”
  4. A document whose name starts with “Extracted PDF” is added to your library

The pages look the same, and your original PDF file stays as it is. If you want to start the writing over, you can make a copy again with the same steps as many times as you like.

How Do I Write on It by Hand?

  1. In the Library, open the imported document (the one whose name starts with “Extracted PDF”)
  2. On the page you want to fill in, open the ︙ menu on its thumbnail and choose “Sign / write”
  3. Pick black, blue or red from the color buttons and write in the fields with your finger
  4. If you make a mistake, “Undo” removes your last stroke, and “Clear” removes everything you wrote on that page
  5. Tap “Save” to apply your writing to the page
  6. To write on another page, repeat the same steps

You can write on one page at a time. For more detail, see How to Write On and Sign a PDF on Android.

How Do I Write Neatly?

  • Write a little smaller than the field: you can't move or resize what you draw afterward, and zooming isn't supported, so keep your writing inside the field
  • Write in short pieces: “Undo” removes one stroke at a time. Stopping after each character or word makes it easier to redo
  • Use black as the default: unless the form says otherwise, write in black and use blue or red for corrections and notes
  • Use a pen for small fields: on a device that supports a stylus, it can be easier to write fine text than with a finger
When you tap “Save,” your writing is applied to the page and cannot be undone. Before you save, check that nothing runs outside a field and nothing is missing. If you want to start over, make a new copy from the original PDF with “Extract pages.”

How Do I Send the Filled-In PDF Back?

Tap “Share” on the document screen, choose an app such as your email app, and send it as an attachment. On the free version, PDFs you share or send carry a small “Created with PDF Toolkit” at the bottom of each page. If that could be a problem, use “Export without watermark” (watching one video ad covers that PDF once) or the PRO version (one-time purchase). If the file is large, “Compress PDF” under Tools can shrink it, but it rebuilds the pages as images, so quality drops.

What If I Want to Type With the Keyboard?

PDF Toolkit does not support keyboard entry. If you want to fill in fields with the keyboard, use another app that supports PDF form filling, or check whether the recipient offers an online form instead.

Summary

You can bring a PDF form you received into your library with “Extract pages,” write in the fields by hand with “Sign / write,” and send it back without printing anything. Writing cannot be undone once saved, so check the size and position of your writing before you save.
